INDIVIDUAL DISK SERIES FOR MS-DOS COMPUTERS:
GEOLOGICAL PROGRAMS AND DATA SETS
April 1993
These individual disks are longtime favorites from COGS. Each disk
contains several programs or data files that are targeted to solving
specific geological problems. Most of these programs were put into the
public domain over the years 1983-1990 by individual COGS members, who
wrote the programs to solve real-world technical problems. Many of the
programs are accompanied by source code, forming a valuable resource for
those who are interested in programming.
Each disk has help files and a menu system to start the program; no
printed documentation is available. See "Notes" at the end of this file
for explanation of bracketed numbers.
Each disk in this series is available by mail order. The list price for
each disk is $12.50; members of COGS can take the member's discount of 20%
on these items. Please indicate which disk size you want: 5-1/4" or 3.5".

COGS IBM-Disk #1 -- Contents:
Decline Curve [1, 10] -- Calculates oil and gas decline curves; estimates
future production.
Quicklook Log Analysis [1, 10] -- Calculates water saturation by Archie's
equation. All factors are variable.
Old Gamma Ray Neutron [1, 10] -- Calibrates old neutron logs and estimates
porosity.
Oil Recovery [1, 10] -- Calculates oil in place, recovery factor, and
recovery efficiency.
Cashflow [2, 10] -- Calculates discounted cash flow from a producing oil or
gas well.
Watsat [2, 10] -- Calculates water saturation from log measurements.

COGS IBM-Disk #2 -- Contents:
Grid2Con Contour Map [3, 10] -- Gridding and contouring package for users
who lack modern printers. Produces contour maps using character cells
on a line printer. DOES NOT draw lines for contours.
Monte Carlo Risk [1, 10] -- For oil reserve estimation using the Monte
Carlo technique, based on acreage, net feet pay, etc.
Water Well Drawdown [1, 10] -- Calculates water well drawdown due to
pumping of a nearby well; uses Theis non- equilibrium well formula.
Drilling Kick [1, 10, 13] -- Computes drilling kick and kill-mud weight for
oil wells.

COGS IBM-Disk #3 -- Contents:
Geostatistical Variograms [8, 11] -- Calculates 2- and 3-dimensional
variograms and some standard statistics from a sequential data file.
The variogram is displayed on the screen; also has options to print
report (needs Epson or Okidata printer).
Trend Surface Analysis [8, 10] -- Computes 1st to 6th order polynomial
trend surfaces. Prints character graphics map of surface.
Synthetic Seismogram [3, 10, 14] -- Calculates synthetic seismogram from
borehole sonic survey.
Seismic Modeling [3, 10, 14] -- Performs seismic modeling, based on
borehole sonic survey data.

Rose Diagram [1, 11] -- Create and display Rose diagrams of strike and dip
and other directional data.
2D Gravity Modeling [1, 10] -- Calculate the gravity anomaly of a two-
dimensional body.
Bingham Model Fluid Flow [1, 10, 13] -- Calculate Bingham flow, using
drilling mud, mud pump, drill string, or casing parameters.
D Exponent [1, 10, 13] -- Computes D exponent.
Frac Gradient [1, 10, 13] -- Computes formation fracture gradient.

COGS IBM-Disk #5 -- Contents:
Soilind [2, 10] -- Calculates soil development indices by method of Harden
& Taylor (1983) and carbonate and clay accumulation values by method of
Machette (1978).
Geofile [1, 10] -- Records chemical concentrations in samples as data
matrix. Variables (SiO2, Cu, etc.) are defined by user. Maximum of 100
samples and 30 variables. Also: Polyplot [1, 10] -- Generates x-y plots
from data files created by Geofile. Can generate linear, log, or
semilog plots; includes linear and polynomial curve-fitting routines.
Stiff [1, 11] -- Generates Stiff diagrams.

Lopat [5, 10] -- Calculate hydrocarbon source rock maturity (TTI values) by
the method of Lopatin. By R. McDowell.
Gridding Advisor [4, 10] -- Suggests a gridding method to match quality of
data and intended use.
Phase [6, 10] -- Draws activity diagrams depicting chemical equilibria
among mineral and aqueous solutions.
Petroleum economics [2, 10] -- Calculates various data on producing oil
wells.

Micronet [7, 11] -- Generates Wulff and Schmidt stereo nets. Plot and
contour structural data.
Stratcol [7, 11] -- Draws stratigraphic columns on dot matrix printer.

COGS IBM-Disk #10 (Published in cooperation with the Colorado Groundwater
Association) -- Contents:
Curvefit [1, 11] -- x-y curve fitting. 25 different equations of fitting
are available, including straight line, hyperbola, parabola, log
normal, etc.
Neuman [3, 11, 12] -- Graphically and interactively fits drawdown to Neuman
curves.
Pumpset [5] -- Calculates pump settings in deep wells (requires math chip).
Recharge [3, 11] -- Artificial recharge; stream or no stream.
Theis [1, 11] -- For ideal artesian aquifer, full penetration wells.
Well [1, 10] -- 1 well simulator.
Wellsim2 [1, 10] -- Calculates confined drawdown from a field of up to 100
wells (either pumping or observation). Injection also simulated.

Geotech 1 [4, 10] -- Geological data recorder with data formats for oil and
gas wells, general (location information and user-defined numeric and

Procomm [4, 11] -- Communications program; can be used with a modem to

Cogssurf [7, 11] -- Contouring program. Does triangulation, gridding,
polynomial trend, double Fourier trend. Does not label contours;
printout is screen-dump size.
Area [1, 11] -- Calculates closure and area of a surveyed polygon.

COGS IBM-Disk #14 -- Contents:
Between the Lines [9, 10] -- Data files of points sampled from surfaces
with known shapes. Use as test data with your gridding & contouring
program to discover how your program represents these surfaces and if
artifacts are introduced into contour maps.
Davis Data [9, 10] -- Several "classic" data sets from "Statistics and Data
Analysis in Geology" by John C. Davis (1973). Topographic surface;
stratigraphic horizon.
PC-TILT [5, 11] -- Adjusts linear or planar data (plunge, dip & strike) to
remove effects of post-depositional tilting, and calculates vector
mean, vector strength, and angular deviation for a set of directional
data.

Reg-In-A-Box [3, 11] -- Hypercard-style database containing EPA's
regulations on underground storage tanks, explanatory text and cross
references. Useful to people needing clarification of these
